About TSFP

The Sportfish Project
The Sportfish Project is a Pacific Marinelife Institute program that brings all of the organisations fishery research, history and education projects under one brand. The Institute is continuing on from its origins in 1993 as a non-profit Foundation dedicated to supporting marlin research, to become a leader in fishery research throughout the Asia Pacific.

Key Sportfish Project Programs:

FishStats
FishStats is a long term monitoring program studying estuary, rocky reef, coral reef and gamefish fisheries in cooperation with the charter boat industry and recreational anglers. Commenced in 1993 by Institute co-founder Ray Joyce, FishStats monitors fish catches, angler effort, habitat sustainability, environmental trends, recruitment stocks as well as assists in age and growth, and reproductive studies. Used to assist in representing key fishing stakeholders, the FishStats database includes information on approximately 40000 trip days and growing.

Sportfish BioResource
Established in 2011 to assist population profiling, age and growth studies and species reproduction research, the Sportfish BioResource collects, catalogues and stores various biological samples for key fisheries along the Australian east coast and South Pacific. Samples are available for use by researchers throughout the region.

Sportfish Tagging Program
The Sportfish Project manages its own tagging programs as well as supports other programs throughout the Pacific for reef and gamefish. The tagging program aims to assist in monitoring the migration or key recruitment stocks.

The Fishing Museum
The Fishing Museum is a Pacific Marinelife Institute initiative to be housed principally online and exhibit fishing's past and living history from Australia and around the Pacific. The Fishing Museum will preserve the achievements, stories, memories and memorabilia of the people, places, boats, events, fish and organisations that are part of our fishing history. The Fishing Museum will assist in collating important information to be used in the research and management of the various fisheries.
